Decipher Rooms

Decipher Rooms was recommended to us from the good folks at Prison Breaker.  It was great to see some camaraderie in the business side of things, because the fact is that after you have completed all the rooms from one place, you either wait for them to create a new room or are left to explore somewhere new.

We asked for a recommendation and they recommended the LAB, however we needed a larger party for it.  We chose the Den over the Office for something more difficult.

Rooms: 3
Reviewed rooms:  The Den

Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score
: 4.0 of 5.0

The Den itself was appropriately furnished and didn’t have any ‘dollar store’ quality items (at least not to my memory).  There were a couple items that were fragile, but they fit the theme well.  The music/sound was appropriate as well and it worked well with the _________ limitation to the room.

Bells and Whistles:
Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score: 2.0 of 5.0

I’d have to say that the majority of the puzzles involved lockbox opening.  There wasn’t anything that particularly stood out, other than the end game puzzle and some others that involved the environment.

Intuitive (aka Frustration Level):  Was it solvable? or Did you have to be inside the creators mind to solve it?
Score: 1.0 of 5.0

The Den is one of their more difficult rooms, and our team definitely felt it.  Unfortunately for a number of Red Herrings (and lack of ___________ ) it made the room more difficult to solve than it should have been.  Although if the __________ factor had been removed the room would have been much easier to solve, which would have made the Den less of a ‘go find clues’ room and more of a puzzle solving room.

The other problem was we were experiencing some difficulty with the lockboxes.  As we’ve experienced in some other escape rooms, the locks don’t always work 100 %.  Some locks are more sensitive than other and require you to be right on the mark and other don’t.  Sometimes you can control this, other times you can’t.  But this was one of those times.

Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?
Score: 5.0 of 5.0

The staff was friendly and fun to chat with.  Decipher Rooms is ran by 3 best friends who decided to do something fun while hanging out.  They are enthusiastic and also support the Vicinity program (if you’ve been to chatime then you know what this is). They seem enthusiastic about what they do, and after talking to a fellow escaper (EscapistTO, http://escapistto.wordpress.com/) it seems that they are trying to improve and listen to their clients.

The current price is $15 , if you check in via facebook.

Overall:  I think Decipher Room has great potential.  The room design of the Den and service show that they aren’t trying to be a fly-by-night business.  Unfortunately the bells and whistles and puzzles need a bit of work.  They recommended we try the Lab with a larger group, which I hope to try in the future after they have some of the kinks worked out.
