Triango is located in Scarborough, very close to Scarborough Town Centre.  We were in withdrawal after going to so many good (and bad) places last week that we needed a quick fix.  Looking at the master list we noticed the only place close to us left was Triango.  We called them at night and it seemed they had all their rooms available.  And then our night went downhill.

Rooms: 3
Reviewed rooms:  the Castle

Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score : 2.0 of 5.0

The Castle was recommended to us by the staff at Triango.  The themes boast on having 5 rooms each, but looked like they have been through their share of wear and tear (wallpaper torn from the walls, key objects painted very roughly, lots of dust in a movable component).  It almost feels like the rooms were built around the technology instead of the theme.  They definitely get some marks for adding interesting puzzles, but it seems more like a series of disjointed puzzles than a complete story.

Bells and Whistles: Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score: 4.5 -> 0.0 of 5.0

As mentioned above it feels more like the room was built around these ‘cool pieces of tech’.  The cool part was there was only 1 lockbox.  The integration of puzzle and tech was pretty well done, but again it feels like disjointed puzzle race rather than progressing through a castle.  There were definitely some items and possibly 1 very cool custom component.

However that custom component also raised a huge red flag with us as well.  Without spoiling it, it is possible to get seriously injured by this without the proper operation or instructions (given the velocity it was travelling).  When we got to this point, the staff came in the room to operate it (whether it was by coincidence or on purpose we don’t know).

(aka Frustration Level):  Was it solvable? or Did you have to be inside the creators mind to solve it?
Score: 2.0 of 5.0

The staff at Triango stick to their 2 hints rule (they give you a free hint if you check in on facebook), and if your team was anything like ours you’ll definitely need them.  The clues left on the walls were hard to decipher as it seems they were trying to translate a clue from chinese to english.  The biggest punch-in-the-gut was after we almost completed the 3rd room the gamemaster refused to show us the final answer and waited for us to exit.

Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?
Score: 2.0 of 5.0

The staff seemed friendly when we first called.  We asked what their most popular room was and they recommended the Time Travel room.  About 20 min later we received a call back to see if we wanted to move our appointment later.  When we arrived one of our teammates communicated in chinese with the gamemaster and he told us to do the Castle instead.  We weren’t impressed that they were so strict with their hints, yet the puzzles were unclear.

Their current price is $26.00 per Person, its definitely on the high side for the experience.

Overall: I can definitely see with enough polish (and safety checks) Triango could be great, but falls short in some big areas.  They definitely are a step above some of the Scarborough places but are right now we don’t plan to revisit.
