Escape Newmarket – The Heist

Escape Newmarket is located on Main St. Newmarket.  We were joined by Team Mardi on a sunday night with nothing better to do.  We were greeted by Gamemaster Chris who was surprised to see us.  He told us of 20 groups to play The Heist only 4 had escaped.  This time around we knew what these guys were capable of, so we went in expecting a little more than last time.

Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score : 3.5 of 5.0

Keeping in mind this isn’t a high end facility (built by guys who have alot of capital), The Heist is a decently constructed room.  The most impressive part of the room is actually a huge ‘vault’ door (if the theme was set in an olde time bank).  The props and set need polish and don’t hit the same great notes as their first room, but it does the job of storytelling (much better than some of the places in Markham/Scarborough).  I would definitely be curious to see what these guys would come up with the right contractor and a bigger start-up budget.

Bells and Whistles: Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score:  3.5 of 5.0

There was clever use of tech with the theme.  Again, I wouldn’t come here expecting an Omescape-tech-heaven experience but they utilized tech smartly to play with the theme.  In fact there was one part I almost wish they didn’t use as part of the “tech” experience, but they implemented it much better than some of their peers.  There were no technical or safety issues, if anything the laptop in the room couldn’t hold too long of a charge, but it was functional!.

(aka Frustration Level):  Was it solvable? or Did you have to be inside the creators mind to solve it?
Score:  5.0 of 5.0

The puzzles make sense and this time around you could tell the guys have polished their game.  They rated it harder than their first room, however we found it easy and escaped in record time (probably the types of puzzles rang better with us).  Nothing is wasted and it contained lots of fun elements.

Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?

It was good to chat with Gamemasters Chris again, and it seems like he’s caught the escape bug.  He mentioned that because of the success of Escape Newmarket it might continue after he heads back to school.  Stay tuned for more info!

The price is $20 / person with a $3 discount if you LIKE them on Facebook.  Which for the area and experience was reasonable (mainly cause they are the only ones around).

Overall:  The Heist is a simple and fun room.  I think experienced and new escapers will enjoy the puzzles.  Chris mentioned they will have a 3rd room coming up, which we will gladly return to play.
