Gr8escape – B&B Breakout

Gr8escape is located on the side of an office building.  The GPS brought us around to the side of an office building where it was locked.  We called and found out the actual entrance is on Ontario St, just where the Theatre entrance is.  We were greeted by Gamemasters Sim and Julia who brought us to our room.

Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score : 4.5 of 5.0

The story starts in Vegas as you are about to check-into a crappy motel.  You are in a rush to make it to a Britney concert (although I did find myself asking why Britney…) and the owners lock you in this room.  It’s deifinitely hard to write about it, but the part that sold the story well was actually Gamemaster Sim’s enthusiasm and storytelling ability.  When he closed the door, the room itself was pretty standard.  The set was solid and contained everything that a motel would have (minus unmentionable stains… which might have been a good part).  To their credit they actually snipped off wires  from all electronics so that you wouldn’t be scrambling to turn on things.  It was a simple room with nothing really wrong with it, but at the same time nothing stood out either.

Bells and Whistles: Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score:  3.0 of 5.0

For a shady motel theme there was no technical or safety issues, they played it safe and had a series of lockboxes.  I would have to say there was one particular puzzle we found that was pretty crafty, but overall the room was somewhat predictable.

Intuitive
(aka Frustration Level):  Was it solvable? or Did you have to be inside the creators mind to solve it?
Score:  3.5 of 5.0

There were at least two puzzles that we needed to make a significant logical leap.  In one case we understood what the question was asking and had the answer, but we didn’t know how to apply the answer.  In another case, we needed a clue to connect the parts together and even still we needed another hint where the directions weren’t clear.  Otherwise the rest of the room was straightforward.

The hint system uses a light switch which calls the gamemaster into the room.  They were quick to respond and we had no issues with it.

Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?

Gamemaster Sim and Julia we very friendly and great to chat with.  We gabbed about some of the escapes they did in Toronto and thanks to them we found out about “QLUE” (unfortunately they weren’t open).

The price is $20 / person plus tax with a $2 discount if you check-in on Facebook and another $2 if you pay in cash.  Which with the discounts is reasonable for the experience.

Overall:  The B&B Breakout is a simple room with great hosts, but doesn’t stand out.  It seems that Gr8escape has some interesting plans for their future rooms (which includes a prison that players from the outside can watch).  With that being said we will probably visit them again to see what they’ve cooked up.
