Gamemaster Spotlight – The Hour

On our St. Catharines/Niagara Trip we decided to make a stop at The Hour.  To be honest we didn’t know what to expect of a small-town escape, but GMs Selina and Marcy surprised us with their very solid and fun rooms.  Here is the dynamic duo and what they have to say..

Why did you get involved in the Escape Room business?

Our team used to play escape rooms online when we were younger, as in sit down and try to solve for hours at a time. We had no idea that these game existed until we traveled to Vancouver where we were searching for “thing to do” on a Google search. When an unexpected layover happened on our way home, in Chicago, we again searched for “things to do”. Unfortunately, in both instances, there were no spaces available and we didn’t get to play a game. However, the seed was planted, and over a deep-dish pizza, we decided we were going to dive into the world of Escape Rooms!

What do you think makes your facility standout in the city?

We are the only Escape Room in St. Catharines and therefore have a leg up in the industry for sure. While there are two more in the Niagara Region, we have found that we have been able to make a name for ourselves based on quality and uniqueness.

Do you have any Interesting stories about any players/Teams?

Our lives at the office are spent laughing and we absolutely love how we have come to know a lot of our customers on a personal level as they continue to come back for more! A group I will always remember was a group from TD bank, who decided that they would each dress up in appropriate costumes relating to the rooms they were doing. The business was filled with pirates, convicts and FBI agents and it was just an all around incredible experience with them! I have since invited a few of them back with their branches, and it’s always an amazing time!

Jail Break
EGR:  The Hour’s Jail Break, was a challenging room that had some fun tactile moments

What are some places people are more likely to visit before/after your rooms?

Since we are located in the heart of St. Catharines, we often have teams who have either gone for dinner and drinks prior to arrival, or afterward. It’s nice to be contributing to bringing in out-of-towners to downtown St. Catharines!

Emma's Disappearance
EGR: Emma’s Disappearance will keep you on your toes, luckily we had our cop friend with us.

Do players have a favourite room?

Each of our rooms has its own level of enjoyment and a different twist or turn while escaping. However, it seems that the most excitement comes out of Mutiny at the Hour, when people get that final key and escape they are absolutely thrilled each and every time! I also find that we have a lot more conversation about the inner-workings of this room versus the others. They like when we are able to take the time to walk them through each step and explain how we did it.

Mutiny at the Hour
EGR:  ‘Mutiny at the hour’ is a room most enthusiast love, we hope to visit soon to try it.

Any other cool or interesting things you want your players/potential players to know?

We have officially opened room number 4, The Lost Ones, and it is more the style of Mutiny at the Hour. Feedback has been great, though we haven’t had too many people through it yet, and our timing has been perfect (around 57 minutes!) We really hope to continue to offer a product that people will want to come back to again and again, as long as we continue to have the support of St. Catharines and Niagara, we will continue to provide the best escape rooms we can imagine!

We can’t wait to revisit St. Catharines to try out Mutiny and The Lost Ones.  If you are in the area, don’t hesitate to give “The Hour” a ring.
