Gamemaster Spotlight – Escape Maze

“Impressed” is probably understating what we thought of Escape Maze on our visit.  We had just finished our Ottawa weekend of escapes so we were somewhat jaded and expecting something derivative.  Escape Maze was everything but.  The clever thing is they incorporated the rich history in that region and made it part of their escapes.  Here to share their story is GM Jake:

EGR: Welcome to Escape Maze.  Yes, it’s actually in this barn.

I was vacationing in Holland, Googled “fun things to do” and I started
reading about an escape room. My cousins in Holland had not heard of one
either but we were all eager to try it. (maybe a bit nervous too) It sounded like such a fun idea, I was already mentally planning to open one when I got home before I had even tried it. When I got home; our family started brainstorming and we decided to open one on our 129 acre family farm in an unused barn. Since it was a barn we adopted a theme to our facility of the Ontario 1866 Gold Rush. We live on a gravel, dead-end road so we wanted our theme to match our surroundings.

EGR: The Escape Maze Team or should I say Family looking very dapper

Working with family can be challenging at times, but there are plenty of benefits as well. We all bring a different skill set to the table, including a contractor, photographer, seamstress, tech-guy, event planner, painter, bookkeeper and artist. It took two months before we could open our doors August 2014. We received great reviews and coverage from the local media early on which really helped with our success.

Our gold rush theme begins the minute you see our site. Immediately you are transported in time to the old western with our saloon front. Inside its all reclaimed lumber, steel and artifacts we were able to find. We have five rooms now, a year later, all with a gold rush theme. Our current rooms are The Backhouse Poker Room, The Sheriff’s Office, The One Room
Schoolhouse, Miss Kitty’s Parlour and our haunted one for the Halloween season, The Shaft, based on an abandoned mine shaft.

EGR:  Smiling groups and staff are guaranteed (‘peace signs’ are optional)

Before players begin we show them a 5 minute movie on the 1866 Ontario Gold Rush. I like to provide a bit of history that goes with our theme. After players have done the room challenge, we invite them into our Photo Shoppe, dress up in pioneer clothes and take an old timey photo that we post on Facebook. Many players enjoy this part as much as the room escape.

EGR: What you’ll see as you drive in to Escape Maze… but with more colour.

We are 10 minutes from Peterborough where we often send players to enjoy one of our fantastic downtown restaurants or a tour of the world’s largest liftlock or our free zoo with a frisbee golf course and kid’s waterpark. We are also located close to Lang Pioneer Village, Warsaw Caves, Tree Top Trekking and home to Kawartha’s Buttertart Tour. Out-of-town guests will
often make a day or weekend out of visiting us.

We are thrilled to be apart of this business where we get to see so many smiling faces and hear how much fun they had together.

If you are looking for somewhere fun and out of the city,  Escape Maze is the perfect spot for you.
