Gamemaster Spotlight – Perplexity Escape Games

Whether its a unique spin on a theme (Kate’s Motel) or something completely original (The Elevator), the team at Perplexity knows how to make fun games.  Here is GM Veteun with the story behind Perplexity:

Why did you get involved in the Escape Room business?

Our obsession with room escapes first began around July 2014. We assembled a group of 12 friends and took on our first escape room in Toronto – “Escape from the Mysterious Room”. The experience was nothing short of great as we had a phenomenal time (not to mention we were the 8th group out of 220+ to escape). Needless to say, we were hooked. Over the course of a few months, we spent almost every weekend (and some weeknights) travelling across the GTA to try our hand at all the escape rooms that would have us. 30+ escape rooms later and sometime around Christmas, three of us were chatting – talking about how there weren’t enough facilities in West end (Brampton, Mississauga, Oakville, etc.), what we remembered about the escape rooms we had done, what we liked/disliked/really disliked, etc. and talked about possibly blogging about our experiences. Then, someone casually mentioned the idea of opening up our own. Seeing how the idea brought smiles to all our faces, we knew it was an undertaking we definitely had to pursue.

It was almost magical…the stars had aligned. LOL. Each of the three partners had something different to offer and we just meshed really well. Together we had strategic business knowledge/experience, technical education/savvy, and beautifully creative minds. We complemented each other really well which made it easy for us to get Perplexity Escape Games up and running. Don’t get us wrong – there was plenty of (fake) blood, sweat, and tears that went into building our place. We really couldn’t have asked for a better team of partners. And, our friends and family have been nothing but supportive and willing to lend a hand. We couldn’t have done it without them!

EGR:  Its the most fun you’ll ever have trapped in an elevator.

What do you think makes your facility standout in the city?

Well, we are the first and only in Brampton right now, but we’re definitely feeling the love from escape gamers from all over! Customers have told us that they love our general decor and our games area, which we are happy to hear as we really wanted to have an inviting space for them, before and after their escape experience.

We’d like to think that our customers enjoy their overall experience – from the second they walk through our doors to the moment when they get home and see their post game photo on our Facebook page. We love interacting with our customers, which is evident from how we’ll take the time to provide them with proper clues, sit and play board games with them, and even belt out a song or duet during karaoke hour.

Furthermore, customers have told us on a number of occasions that they really enjoy our puzzles; how well integrated they are into the storyline. Having done ‘a few’ rooms ourselves, we’ve come to also appreciate when escape room puzzles fit the motif, decor, and story. It really adds to the immersion and overall experience. That’s why a huge portion of our room planning is dedicated to ensuring our puzzles are not only effective, but won’t leave players scratching their heads and thinking, “Why is this even in here?”

EGR:  This room is screaming “great for corporate events”.

Do you have any Interesting stories about any players/Teams?

Too many to tell! =) We love our customers and every group that comes through is different. You can sometimes tell which groups are likely to get scared or surprised easily – they’re the best to mess with. However, what’s even better is when a group manages to scare themselves! In our room “The Short Cut”, there have a been few teams that, without us doing anything, have scared themselves silly; crawling over each other and screaming for help (which won’t come, lol). In one particular instance, while in the complete darkness, a customer had accidently kicked a flashlight which rolled and hit the foot of another team member. Both of them screamed out loud and tried to run away from the “mysterious” object, but didn’t make it very far as they were both handcuffed to the wall. It was almost like a scene straight out of a cartoon…just hilarious.

When these things happen i.e. scares, mishaps, surprises, etc., we’ll often play back our video footage for the customers, which they really enjoy watching. It’s usually great for a laugh and just another thing we can add to our customer service experience.

EGR:  Of course no waiting area would be complete without boardgames!

What are some places people are more likely to visit before/after your rooms?

We absolutely love it when our guests hang out in our Board Game lounge either before or after their room escape to play some of our many games! But if they are looking for something a little different, we are in a great location that is close to several activities. We are just across the street from Cineplex Orion Gate and many great sit-down restaurants such as Boston Pizza, Shoeless Joes and Caravan Kabob House. If our customers would just like a quick bite, Tim Horton’s, Wendy’s, McDonald’s or Subway are just minutes away, as well as several other fast-food restaurants. On a Friday or Saturday night, our guests can complete a room escape (or 2!) and then gather at nearby Jake’s Boathouse to celebrate their victory on the dance floor. There are a lot of ways to make Perplexity the beginning or end to an amazing time out with friends and / or family.

EGR:  Kate’s Motel and The Short Cut are two of their creepier rooms.  The props and set design definitely sell it.

Do players have a favourite room?

Kate’s Motel was our very first room that received a review, and what a fantastic review it was! We soon noticed a great boost in bookings for Kate’s, and those bookings haven’t slowed down yet. Customers absolutely love this room and they let us know this with their awesome feedback & online reviews, by recommending the room to others, and in some cases even coming back to do the room a second time!

The Elevator is our newest room and it has become very popular too. Even though it was designed to be a beginner room, both newbies and experienced escape gamers alike rave about the look and feel of the room, and of course, our puzzles!

We are also working diligently on our fifth room which will be opening soon and we are sure it is going to be a crowd-pleaser. We asked our customers what type of room they prefer, and we are delivering…This room will be the creepily clever and challenging escape game our guests asked for, and we couldn’t be more excited!

EGR:  How often do you see a winning signs with a “I am a @#$!’n Genius”?

Any other cool or interesting things you want your players/potential players to know?

We can’t be certain, but we think our location just might be haunted. We often hear unexplained voices and banging…and things here mysteriously go missing…like our customers. Just kidding…or are we? 😉
