Crypto Escape Rooms – The Experiment
Crypto Escape Rooms is located in Newmarket, just off Davis Dr. on the 404. It’s on the upper floor of a building shared with a bowling alley. Our friends Errol and Manda drove from downtown just as eager as we were to try a new room. When we arrived, GM’s Chris and Stephen had just finished hosting their very first group (outside of beta). It was their first escape and you could tell they thoroughly enjoyed it, which was uplifting for us.
*Please note we played this room on Opening night, so the game may change
Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score : 4.5 of 5.0
The first thing that surprised us was the impressive set design. The room felt solid, with good props and interesting puzzles. The audio intro and soundtrack enhanced the immersion and also helped give the room a sense of urgency.
Bells and Whistles: Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score: 4.5 of 5.0
We were surprised by the quality of the tech in this room, which almost felt like a top notch Toronto room. There had fun task-based puzzles and also a surprise story element. We were fortunate there were no issues (but again we were the second ‘official’ group to play).
We had some minor technical issues with the flashlights, but that can be chalked up for a first-day headache.
Intuitive (aka Frustration Level): Was it solvable? or Did you have to be inside the creators mind to solve it?
Score: 5.0 of 5.0
This was a hard room. Even with 4 seasoned escapers it used every ounce of experience and know-how to escape. Were the puzzles bad? No. The puzzles (for the most part) were straightforward, but it was a combination of the more difficult ones we have come across in our travels. The one exception to all of this was a very unique puzzle that we felt might cause some newer player more trouble. However we heard this puzzle has been undergoing many iterations and will continue to do so.
Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?
Gamemasters Chris and Stephen were great to chat with and mentioned they hope to get their next game up in the next month to 2 months.
You can find their prices on their website! The price is definitely worth the experience.
Overall: The Experiment is an exceptional small-town escape. GM Chris and Stephen seem to have a good grasp on what makes escape rooms fun. We are eagerly awaiting their next room to see what they can cook up.
