Escape Games – Mayan Curse

Escape Games is located near Downsview Station at Dufferin and Sheppard.

We decided to mix it up a little bit and asked Marina and Shaun from Captive to join us.  The two of them love escape rooms just as much as us, and we couldn’t ask for better partners.  Mayan Curse is one of Escape Games’ Generation 1 games, and also their easiest.  We were eager to see how this game measured up to their newer ones.

Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score : 4.0 of 5.0

The Mayan Curse felt uniquely authentic through most of the rooms.  The walls were textured and played well with the various props in the room.  Compared to some of the Generation 2 games, it is missing some of the polish and deep immersion from those rooms.  But overall a convincing temple/tomb in an immersive aspect.

Bells and Whistles: Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score: 4.0 of 5.0

If we compared this to generation 1 games, this room would definitely blow them away.  Even comparatively to most generation 2 games, this room still has alot to offer.  We liked some of the tech-per-puzzle usage as it had an immersive quality to it.  We almost felt that there could have been more to enhance the immersion aspect  (given what we’ve seen with their generation 2 our bar was set high), but that is really minor.  Thankfully we had no issues with the tech itself.

Intuitive (aka Frustration Level): Was it solvable? or Did you have to be inside the creators mind to solve it?
Score: 4.5 of 5.0

This room is relatively easy compared to their other rooms (and rated as such).  No major issues with puzzles in general.  We do wish some of the puzzles were more in line with the theme however.

The hint system uses a standard walkie-talkie hint, if you go above 1 hint it’s not considered a win.

Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?

The Escape Games Army continues to work like a well oiled machine.

The prices can be found here (it gets complicated to explain) and the price for the experience is one of the best in the city (we usually book 2 back-to-back).

Overall: Mayan Curse is a treat for a Escape Games’ first generation of rooms.  Give it a try if you’ve tried their newer rooms.
