Escape Station – Spaceship Command

Escape Station is located on Queen St. West, in the Beaches area of Toronto.  We went out as part of a celebration for Manda’s birthday with Errol, and Codegreen (aka Leader) from Escapers4G.  We knew at the time of booking that this was their most difficult room, but we were confident we could beat it given our team.

Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score : 3.0 of 5.0

The Spaceship Command’s story starts with your team taking over an alienship, with a countdown to prevent the ship from obliterating the planet (or Toronto… or something).  The room has a few very convincing elements that play well with the theme.  The props were incorporate into the puzzles, but it doesn’t quite touch on the storytelling as much.  The end of the room felt like turning off a light, expected and missing a spark to it.

Bells and Whistles: Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score:  4.0 of 5.0

There is tech used in the room, but it is used for adding dramatic moments rather than enhancing puzzles or story development.  The tech did work as intended, but we felt underwhelmed by it (particularly by two slow moving components).

Intuitive (aka Frustration Level):  Was it solvable? or Did you have to be inside the creators mind to solve it?
Score:  3.0 of 5.0

The room was frustrating in a few ways.  The first task was tedious and took a good amount of time.  After finishing this puzzle, it lacked some direction to guide us, so we went on a few rabbit-trails (paths away from the actual answer).

The hint system uses a dial-in system (you ring in the GM with a in-game phone), we had no issues with it.

Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?

The Gamemaster was friendly and followed up with our experience, we had a quick chat but needed to leave for our next room (which ended up being a flop, but that’s another story).

The price is $25 / person, which felt a bit overpriced for this particular experience.

Overall:  Spaceship Command has some nice touches that would have been great if we had played this room a year or 2 ago.  Unfortunately we walked away feeling ‘underwhelmed’ and ‘frustrated’.  We’ll probably revisit them to try some of their other rooms.
