Perplexcity – Curse of the Evil Genie
Perplexcity is located in Barrie Ontario, just off Highway 400. Not to be confused with Perplexity in Brampton, which is one of our favourte places. We have been itching to try some new out-of-town escapes and we were glad to have a super team, which we will refer to as “Team Awesome”. Walking into the massive lobby it seemed at one time was a family restaurant or a lounge. The GMs brought us to a props area, and played the intro video (which was well crafted).
Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score : 2.5 of 5.0
After the video the experience started to progress downhill. The room uses wall panels to sell the theme and doesn’t quite meet the mark. Some of the props felt out of place and others were flimsy. However for an out of town experience, it was ‘ok’.
Bells and Whistles: Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score: 3.0 of 5.0
The room surprisingly enough had some good technical components that help with surprise elements and puzzles. However we had a major malfunction that disengaged multiple tech components near the beginning of the room (thus ruining all the ‘magic’ of the room).
Intuitive (aka Frustration Level): Was it solvable? or Did you have to be inside the creators mind to solve it?
Score: 2.5 of 5.0
The puzzles were a mixed bag of things that required more direction or insisted you use the hint system. For several of the puzzles we found we needed a few logic leaps to fully understand what the puzzles were asking. Overall the room was somewhat frustrating for what was supposed to be one of their easier rooms.
The hint system uses an ingame monitor that the GM will type clues to you.
Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?
The GMs were friendly and curious to get our feedback. It didn’t seem they have had many customers and are relatively green.
The price is $25.00 / Person. If we didn’t have the major tech malfunction we would consider this an average escape, instead it came off as underwhelming.
Overall: Our experience was soured by a number of things, but if they do a bit of work on their puzzles and set design, they could be a decent.
