Perplexcity -Lost Jewel of Zanzibar

Perplexcity is located in Barrie Ontario, just off Highway 400.  Not to be confused with Perplexity in Brampton, which is one of our favourte places.  We have been itching to try some new out-of-town escapes and we were glad to have a super team, which we will refer to as “Team Awesome”.  This was our second room at Perplexcity and after an underwhelming experience (and a break) we soldiered onto their second room.

Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score : 3.0 of 5.0

The room uses wall panels for the theme and doesn’t quite sell it.  A variety of the props still had flea market stickers and others felt out of place.  The beginning of the room was more convincing than the ending, however overall for an out of town experience, it was ‘ok’.

Bells and Whistles: Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score:  3.0 of 5.0

There weren’t many technical components but enough to impress beginners and new players.  Interestingly enough there were a few similar components that we saw in their previous room, so it was a bit predictable.  The tech is used in surprise and process puzzle components, and do play well.  However we would have liked to see more of these components played into story elements as well.

Intuitive (aka Frustration Level):  Was it solvable? or Did you have to be inside the creators mind to solve it?
Score:  3.0 of 5.0

Like the Genie room, the puzzles were a mixed bag.  Some were relatively straightforward and others required awkward logic leaps to reach the answer.  This room was surprisingly hard for their beginner room, even as a group of 5 enthusiasts.

The hint system uses an ingame monitor that the GM will type clues to you.  In this room it was slightly painful because the GM was a slow typist.

Staff Support/Price
: Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?

The GMs were friendly and curious to get our feedback.

The price is $25.00 / Person, for the experience we thought it was “average”.

Overall:  There are some good components to the room, but they definitely need to be tweaked.  If you find yourself in Barrie, give them a try and let us know what you think.
