Escape Key – Lady Evelyn’s Paradox
Escape Key is located in a commercial complex in Brantford. We were in town for a #REDivas interview with the one and only Dr. Scott Nicholson and decided to tackle a room that has received quite a bit of praise from reviewers. We had previously done their other room Emerald Alert on a previous visit and we enjoyed it. We had high hopes coming back to Escape Key.
Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score : 3.5 of 5.0
Emerald Alert was a room with strong story elements, but we felt Lady Evelyn was a bit of a mish-mash of several themes (or at least the storytelling wasn’t clear to us). The props in the rooms were good quality and solid. We definitely feel that if they melded everything in a more cohesive experience we would have enjoyed it more.
Bells and Whistles: Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score: 3.0 of 5.0
Tech lovers won’t have much to chew on in this room, it uses some very simple concepts, yet uses them cleverly for puzzle design. This room is definitely a step above lockboxes, but not much more.
Intuitive (aka Frustration Level): Did you have to be in the designers mind to escape?
Score: 4.0 of 5.0
We wished there was more direction on which puzzles were related to the main escape and which were related to the secondary objectives. The secondary objectives were largely task-based puzzles, some of which were more difficult to put together.. but again they weren’t required to escape. However for the primary objectives the room was relatively straightforward to solve.
The hint system involved communicating with the GM via an ingame (wall mounted) tablet. We had no issues with it.
Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?
The staff at Escape Key were friendly and great to chat with.
The price $25.00 / person which is comparable with their nearest neighbours.
Overall: Lady Evelyn’s Paradox is a step back from Emerald Alert, but for a small town escape we would recommend it if you are passing by Brantford.
