Escape Maze – Outdoor Adventure – The Great Bear Trail

Escape Maze is located in Peterborough Ontario on farmland.  During the Summer they hosted an Escape Maze Enthusiast Day, which had a flat rate where you could play ALL THEIR ROOMS in a single day (so how could we refuse).  In our forth room of the day we did it with Team Freeing and our #REDivas buddy Manpans.


Background: The Outdoor Adventure is not really an escape room, but more of a puzzle hunt/hike.  In this particular adventure you are retracing the steps of your relative, on this massive land (which took us over 2 hours to hike).  In our case because there were a number of other groups playing other trails, we also had a trading sub-quest added as part of the experience.

Creativity and Design: Did it sell the story / theme?
Summary: Nothing was wasted, a thoroughly cohesive experience

+ Great storytelling as you make your way through the trail
+ The puzzle “stations” were fun and unique, with great props
+ The sub-quest felt fun and authentic as you were trading materials to survive the winter.

Bells and Whistles: Was it more than lockboxes?
Summary: Tech wasn’t a strong point, but considering the journey it wasn’t needed.

+ not many uses of tech, some stations had neat mechanical puzzles

Intuitive:  Did you have to be inside the designer’s mind to solve it?
Summary:  Fun puzzles with an emphasis on storytelling.

+ The puzzles were tied well into the story, it was well researched
+ Finding the puzzle stations became its own puzzle, that was enjoyable.
+ the hint system involved a travelling GM that you might come across, to ask for hints

Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?

The GMs were fantastic as always, probably some of the friendliest people we’ve come across in 3 years of escaping. Extra props to GM Ike for wandering around the grounds to help all of the groups.

Overall: A great experience, especially if you like to wander and enjoy the outdoors with your friends.  If it is mosquito season, I highly recommend bug spray!
