Escape Games Canada – Curse of Crooked Creek
Escape Games Canada has a second location in Mississauga located in a business park. We were itching to do something over the Thanksgiving weekend and decided to dive into their latest. Playing with us was #REDivas Errol , two out-of-towners and Elan Lee (who was also featured in one of our #REDivas episodes).
Long story short: Undo the curse put on the village.
They have created a mini-village which multiple teams could play different paths at the same time. Which is similar to SCA’s Where the Dark Things Dwell experience, although in an enclosed space.
Creativity and Design: Did it sell the story / theme?
Summary: An impressive set, but with a big hiccup.
+ a large scale set, that mimics a village.
– it was hard to hear teammates because of the enclosed space when multiple teams were playing.
Bells and Whistles: Was it more than lockboxes?
Summary: A tech heavy room, but not necessarily used in the right places
+ Heavy automation on storytelling and puzzle elements
+ no tech hiccups
– tech was used to bottleneck players in an open environment.
Intuitive: Did you have to be inside the designer’s mind to solve it?
Summary: The game was solvable but at the cost of being frustrating.
+ The puzzles are mostly straightforward, but largely task-based
– GM encouraged players to streamline tasks in the room for efficiency, but one room literally had one player turning a crank for over 15 minutes.
– one portion of the room had us solving progressively harder versions of the same puzzle, which became irritating given the interface we needed to use.
+ Ingame GMs are available for hints.
Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?
The front staff was friendly and processed our 50% vouchers with no issues, however the GM introducing the game was a different story. He was unenthusiastic and didn’t seem he wanted to be there. A bit of a damper on the experience, but I think the rest of the experience told the story.
You won’t be able to find price details on their website, as it seems they (possibly) closed down the location. .
Overall: Curse of Crooked Creek was a let-down given the potential. Hopefully future iterations will be better.
