Outbreak Escape Games – Animal Hackers
Outbreak Escape Games is located in Downtown Toronto not far from Casa Loma. Outbreak is somewhat hidden in an alley, but there was a small street sign which guided us. We were greeted by GM Lawrence, who had a personalized sign for us and big smile as always. Joining us was Team Awesome who are expert escapers and overall cool people to hang out with.
**NOTE We did the room back in Feb, so there may be some changes since
Creativity and Design: Did it sell the story / theme?
Summary: Great emphasis on storytelling, although the theme wasn’t our cup of tea.
+ The story was told through many mediums, good use of story-based tech
+ Many videos to help immerse you in the room and the very unique theme
+ This room is family friendly
– The set design could have used some polish in some minor areas
Bells and Whistles: Was it more than lockboxes?
Summary: Great fun uses of tech.
+ No tech hiccups
+ tech was used through puzzles and story
+ one very interesting unique use of tech
– one piece of (puzzle) tech felt out of place, but otherwise still fun
Intuitive: Did you have to be inside the designer’s mind to solve it?
Summary: Straightforward for the most part, one puzzle needs some tweaks
+ Overall straightforward (once you break the first ah-ha)
+ Responsive Hint system: Built-in hint system with relevant clues
– one puzzle was a bit confusing in consistency, but there were backups
Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly/helpful? What was the Damage?
GM Lawrence was great to chat with and still seems passionate about storytelling in escape rooms. There is great attention to detail on story, even to the level of describing the typical ‘escape room rules’ (no cellphones, no brute force etc).
Overall: An interestingly unique theme with fun puzzle and tech elements. Definitely worth a try if you’re looking for something different.
