Survive the Night – THE CURSE OF EDEMARAH VILLAGE

Escape Games Canada had a second location in Mississauga located in a business park.  At some point they dissociated themselves with (what i’m assuming is their partners) and now it is “Survive the Night”.  If you’ve been to the previous iteration, imagine all of the tech removed from the village, and that is what Survive the night is.  We went to this escape with superteam E4G and also some random players (mostly first-timers) played with us.

Long story short: Undo the curse put on the village.

Creativity and Design: Did it sell the story / theme?
Summary: An impressive set, but needs some polish

+ a large scale set, that mimics a village.
+ by removing the tech (and turning off the lights) it felt like a haunted village walk.
+ Actors and additional rules were added to shake up the gameplay
– many of the old relics from the previous games were there, but they can be ignored.

Bells and Whistles: Was it more than lockboxes?
Summary:  No tech, but we had no problems with that

+ Actor elements replaced tech
– lots of lockboxes

Intuitive
:  Did you have to be inside the designer’s mind to solve it?
Summary:  A game that is good for large teams, but not necessarily Aha-puzzlers.

+ The puzzles are mostly straightforward and largely task-based
+ Puzzles were mostly non-linear so it was good for large groups
+ A team of 4-8 would be recommended.  Add on more players if they get scared easily

Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?

The front staff was friendly and the ingame GMs did a great job.

The price is about $30/person, but we used a groupon for this adventure

Overall:  A surprisingly fun time considering the major change they made was ripping out the tech.  I guess this goes to show, sometimes all you need is elbow grease and some clever mechanics.
