Funhaven – Curse of the Forgotten
Funhaven is located outside the downtown core in Ottawa. It was our third of many escapes on our Montreal 2018 trip (which included a stop-over in Ottawa). Joining us was Dawn, a Enthusiast who does pop-up escape rooms and her husband Ryan. We meant to visit Funhaven on our previous trips, but on those other occasions they closed up those experiences.
Long story short: You are explorers and… well you know the usual spiel
Creativity and Design: Did it sell the story / theme?
Summary: Good set design, but there were problems with the environment.
+ The set design is definitely impressive, a good take on a tomb
+ Fun interactive pieces in the second half of the room.
– environmental factors (particularly the rollercoaster beside the escape room and lack of soundproofing) made it hard to catch audio cues.
Bells and Whistles: Was it more than lockboxes?
Summary: Overall solid for tech uses
+ The room didn’t have any lockboxes
+ good use of puzzle related tech, that felt in-line with the story/theme
+ No tech hiccups in the room
Intuitive: Did you have to be inside the designer’s mind to solve it?
Summary: A harder game for sure, more direction could be provided.
+ Most puzzles have enough direction to give you guidance
– Definitely more leaps in logic than Deep Descent
– on one occasion there was a reset error, which made us fumble around for a bit
– hints were given by a GM coming in the room, if they catch you waving at the camera
Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?
The Staff at Funhaven are more geared to accommodating the rest of their facilities (an indoor amusement park), but still very friendly. The GMs noted to us that to to catch their attention we would need to wave to the camera, on one occasions it did take a few minutes before we had a response. To be fair this GM was more enthusiastic than our GM for Deep Descent.
Overall: Curse of the Forgotten has all the ingredients for a great rooms but somehow misses it in execution. Definitely above average than our other Ottawa experiences but it could be better.
