Daydream Adventures – Dream Portal
We’ve been on several Escape Room droughts through the year, but decided to tag along to do an escape room with our friend Lizette (and the rest of the Divas+Ekko). Daydream Adventures is located on the Danforth in Toronto which is a bit of a trek for us, but Errol basically lives next door to it, so he was eager to try it out.
Long story short: The GMs shared with us that the venue itself has an overall story: a meteorite has hit the Danforth and opened up portals to other dimensions. This particular portal is to a realm of magic and dreams.
Creativity and Design: Did it sell the story / theme?
Summary: Great execution on selling the fantasy theme
+ Lots of effort into the set design and details of the room
+ Excellent tech and environmental effects that help sell the fantasy theme
Bells and Whistles: Was it more than lockboxes? Did it enhance the experience?
Summary: Ambitious, tasteful and fun!
+ A good mix tactile tech that help support the process based puzzles
+ Ambitious use of tech for environmental effects (for a first room) and it mostly paid off
– One minor tech issue with something sound related, but it didn’t full-stop our game
Intuitive: Did you have to be inside the designer’s mind to solve it?
Summary: A good beginner to casual player experience
+ Mostly straightforward puzzles, heavy on task-based (which is good for new players)
+ we completed the entire experience with time to spare
+ a good game for a team for 3-4 players, we went in with 7 but we still had things to do.
Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?
The staff at Daydream Adventures were friendly and all former Escape Room employees/managers from other companies (that we’ve met before). The effort and thought into the venue definitely show not only with the Dream Portal, but also the details throughout the facility. We anticipate they’ll only get better from here.
The price per person was $30 per person and we’d say it is definitely an above-average experience.
Overall:
If you ever imagined pouring your heart and soul into creating your own escape room, that’s exactly what The Dream Portal feels like. It’s not Disney or 5wits or 13th Gate, but it is a fantastic first room from the Daydream team.
