Durham Escape Rooms – Spy vs Die (CLOSED)
Durham Escape Rooms is located in Whitby, ON on a small commercial/residential road. We booked all 3 of their rooms to play back-to-back and was surprised to see they had a ticket system (where you can potentially play with randoms). In this room we played 2 other couples, which had a few games under their belt.

Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score : 4.0 of 5.0
The room was your standard interrogation room with handcuffs, a metal table and one very large mirror. Everything was relatively well done, minus 1 or 2 minor details.
Bells and Whistles: Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score: 3.5 of 5.0
This room was missing some of the more interesting things we saw in King’s Crypt, but it did have one creative element that was well integrated with the room. The room does utilize some more traditional forms of tech, but it was briefly used. Thankfully there were no technical issues in this room.
Intuitive (aka Frustration Level): Was it solvable? or Did you have to be inside the creators mind to solve it?
Score: 3.0 of 5.0
Even with a more experienced group we had as few issues. There were a few logical leaps that were needed and required us to use our hints. The first seemed like a destructible puzzle that was lacking direction (and would require some brute forcing), to fix this GM had to reset it for us. There other minor cases of puzzles lacking direction and required more guesswork. However aside from those, the puzzles were well done.
The hint system uses walkie talkies, which had the GM come in the room.
Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?
The GM’s at Durham Escape were a friendly bunch and happy to chat with us. We learned one of their favourite places was Escape Manor in Ottawa and we can definitely see the parallels.
The price for is $23.00 + tax / person, with discounts for social media check-ins.
Overall: Spy vs Die is your standard interrogation room with 1 or 2 small surprises. Its definitely not our favourite at Durham Escape Rooms, but an above-average out-of-town escape.
