Room Escape Ottawa – Stranded
Room Escape Ottawa is located outside the downtown core in Ottawa. It was our first of many escapes on our Montreal 2018 trip (which included a stop-over in Ottawa). Joining us was Gilles, an Enthusiast who has traveled between Ottawa and parts of Quebec , and his daughter. We had heard mixed reviews from this particular room so we went in with leveled-expectations, even though our last experiences were great.
Long story short: You are stranded on a alien world (I think) and you need to find your way home.
Creativity and Design: Did it sell the story / theme?
Summary: Good set design, some polish needed
+ The set design did a decent job to disguise the space.
+ Good environmental uses of props and set design to sell the immersion
+ One physical aspect to it, but an alternative for people who don’t want to do it.
– Some puzzles showed signs of wear and tear
Bells and Whistles: Was it more than lockboxes?
Summary: Solid tech implementation
+ Great use of tech all around the room, everything is tightly integrated
+ good use of puzzle related tech, that felt in-line with the story/theme
+ We had no tech hiccups
Intuitive: Did you have to be inside the designer’s mind to solve it?
Summary: Good overall, probably more fun for newer players
+ Straightforward puzzles, mostly task based.
+ good integration of tasks built into the theme
– some puzzles felt a bit tedious, but other players might enjoy them
+ hints were given via a screen in the room
Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?
The Staff at REO are a well oiled machine. They are were more business-like than friendly, but friendly enough. They take two photos at the beginning of the experience (one for winning and losing) so you don’t really wait around at the end (if that’s good or bad, i guess we can debate that). We were supposed to return to do Deliverance, but it was also the weekend a tornado touched down, so REO didn’t have power at that time.
The price you can find on their website.
Overall: Stranded was a fun experience, made better with new friends. I would recommend it to newer players and people looking for something more unique than your typical serial killer/egypt/jail rooms.
