ESC-IT
ESC-IT was our first escape. It was originally located in Richmond Hill and changed locations to Markham, just across Markville mall.
Rooms: 7
Reviewed rooms: Cursed Library, Cryptic Cellar, Escape With Vision, Code War, Mission Museum.
Creativity and Design (aka its Fancy level): – Was it inventive ? Did it fit the theme?
Score : 3.0 of 5.0
I have a bit of a soft spot for ESC-IT since it was our first. Cursed Library was the first escape room i have played. Rooms like Code War and Cryptic Cellar were made to fit the themes (complete with CRTs and Wine Bottles). Although probably because they one of the first escape rooms, some of the clues and boxes are a bit worn (and the staff have admitted that they have been through some wear and tear as frustrated players would break things). I was a bit disappointed with Escape with Vision (part of the proceeds go to World Vision, which is great) because it felt things were just quickly thrown together to create a new room. Mission Museum, felt more like an art gallery than a museum and doesn’t quite hit the quality of their other rooms.
Bells and Whistles: Was it just lockboxes throughout the Room?
Score: 3.0 of 5.0
The gamemasters at ESC-IT (not sure they are called gamemasters, but i’m going to coin the inventors of the rooms this term), definitely try to utilize technology as best as they can. Computers, TV’s, CD players, they use everyday household things to fit their theme. After experiencing some other escape rooms its not as inventive as the other rooms however still entertaining (please see At Escape and Xscaper Arts). So you can expect to see many pad locks and combination locks, but finding out the codes are still fun.
Intuitive (aka Frustration Level): Was it solvable? or Did you have to be inside the creators mind to solve it?
Score: 4.0 of 5.0
This can definitely be subjective however of the rooms we tried, they were solvable. At times it did require a hint from the staff however following through the rooms (usually the last few clues).
Staff Support/Price : Were they friendly? Were they helpful? What was the Damage?
Score: 5.0 of 5.0
The staff have always been friendly. At times they have given a few clues and were open to comments and improvements. Infact they updated Code War (to make it simpler) after we had a chat.
The current price was around $15, however they require you to check in Via Facebook and pay cash.
Overall: If you’re looking for a good first experience and don’t want to burn a hole in your wallet, you can’t go wrong with ESC-IT. They have definitely set the bar for the other rooms, and they are still making new rooms. We we hope to revisit and see if they’ve improved on their Bells and Whistles.
